These are my notes on the smashwords style guide, with other notes and resources. Copied from personal notes for the interest of anyone with ebook publishing ambition.

EBOOK PREP Use Word(/LibreOffice Writer) styles: Indent on first line of paragraph OR separate paragraphs with line breaks (Block Method). Short version of the following? Don't define line spacing in pts. Leave pts empty; define line spacing by lines (1, or 1.5 etc.) “AVOID THIS COMMON LINE SPACING ERROR: The image below shows an example of a common line spacing error mentioned above that will cause your sentences to overlap and become unreadable. Whether you use the first line indent method or the block method, make sure the “Line Spacing” is set to “Single” or “1.5” and under the “At:” heading it should always remain blank. As I mentioned in the paragraph above, NEVER NEVER allow any entry into the “At:” field, otherwise your book may become unreadable in the HTML reader and in the EPUB. If this error slips through our review process, retailers will remove your book when their customers complain. To determine if this error might be affecting your document, right mouse click on any paragraph, click Paragraph, and then you’ll see the box below. As mentioned above, this error is most commonly caused when you create your manuscript in a program other than Microsoft Word, and then the non-Word program fails to convert the file into a proper Word .doc.” Set the font color to “Automatic.” Don't use tabs, spaces, or paragraph returns to indent or demark anything. Use styles. Include page breaks in styles? No manual page breaks :/ “Make sure you only have paragraph returns at the end of a paragraph, not at the end of each sentence or every line (unless of course you’re doing poetry).” Do not hyperlink to the following: Affiliate Links, competitive Retailer Links, or PDFs. Embed images (and/or other data?), do not link to them. .png images work best. Downgrade high-res images to 96 dpi. Max internal image width: 500px! Center all images with a centered style. Anchor images (no floating images). OpenOffice/LibreOffice users: anchor image as character. Your .doc file must be 10MB or less. It is not necessary to insert a cover image inside a word doc. The publishing tools attach the image to the final ePub properly. Don't use “Justified” text layout. Don't customize fonts: they vary by eReader (and are set by the eReader). In other words, your fonts will not be in the final product; whatever fonts the reader chooses will be. Minimize font variation sizes throughout your book, otherwise it can look ugly. 14pt headers/12pt text looks great. As a general practice, avoid symbols (created by “INSERT: SYMBOL”) because they may turn into question marks in some ebook formats. (e.g. even the copyright symbol can cause problems; use instead the word “copyright.”) No headers or footers. No page numbering/auto-page numbering. If appropriate, use a generated, Linked Table of Contents (ToC). Note that this is appropriate even for novels. Note that manual ToC entries (in random places, if necessary) can be created with document bookmarks.

Front matter: Title and copyright page (required): “On the first page of your book (unless you add the blurbs above), insert a title and copyright page. This page will look best if you center it.” “Your title/copyright page is the first impression you make on your reader. Make it look professional.” For smashwords, mention them in the title/copyright matter as e.g.: Published by [Authorname] at Smashwords. Avoid long copyright pages. E.g.: TITLE Author Published by [Authorname] at Smashwords. Copyright [year] [author name] “It’s not necessary to place your ISBN inside your ebook. Instead, you’ll attach your ISBN via your Dashboard’s ISBN Manager feature at Smashwords.” Optional: include smashwords license statement after copyright page. Create and include great end matter, e.g.: Brief author bio at end of book May include link to author home page, social media profiles/handles, etc. May include request for review/feedback at favorite reseller, or social media or whatever. Links to other author materials. In other words, a friendly invitation to better get to know you, the author, and your work! Prepare your cover image: Don't create it yourself unless you are a professional artist/graphic designer. (I am! Tee-hee!) eBooks only have a front cover. Must be RGB color profile “1,600 pixels wide by 2,400 pixels tall is generally a good dimension, or such similar ratio. The image must be at least 1,400 pixels wide, and the height should be greater (taller) than the width. A good guideline is to make the height between 1.3 and 1.6 times greater than the width. I think 1.5 to 1.6 usually looks best, though you and your cover designer have some flexibility here. You can view how different dimensions look at Choose a price that ends in $.99, because Apple requires that all prices end in $.99 (although free is acceptable as well).

!File compatibility check: For ePub, try Adobe Digital Editions (which is a program I hate with all my guts). !For MOBI format, try Kindle for PC or Kindle for Mac . !ePub validator (re Apple's requirements): The error messages this will give you are utterly hopelessly stupidly unhelpful (as I write this, according to the guide I summarize, on 07/23/2014 at 10:13:19 AM).

Create a linked TOC using LibreOffice Writer's TOC generator, then in Navigator, make it editable, delete the ellipses and page numbers, use it to jump (CTRL+click) to the various sections, at those sections copy the header texts, insert bookmarks (use the bookmark insert feature to do so: at the same line as the header (using that copied header name). Then in Navigator delete the links from the TOC, copy the text of the TOC, paste into a plain-text editor, save and close the Writer document, reopen the writer document, paste into it the plain-text TOC (which you just copied to a plain text document–otherwise, it would paste it from Writer memory and it would still have freaky link formatting), and replace the links in this new TOC with internal bookmarks (using the hyperlink/link tool). This sad burden was had 08/15/2014 11:30:20 PM -RAH. TIP: If you create a bookmark at the TOC, you can double-click that bookmark in the navigator to more quickly jump back up to the TOC as you use it to jump back down to whatever place in the document to create your other bookmarks. 08/15/2014 11:33:56 PM -RAH Software to auto-create bookmark TOCs and do other cook stuff, if you're distributing the ebook yourself (I'm not–I'm having smashwords regurgidate a darn .doc file): WAIT A MINUTE: if that tool creates .epub files, that may do better. Upload to smashwords and first convert your Amazon title with its tweaked (“published at Amazon”) title page and copyright, only in .mobi format, first. THEN upload your general smashwords-license version and convert to all other formats. Otherwise you get an “auto-vetter” error about your .mobi version.

Then you can upload the .mobi version to Amazon. This burden was had 08/16/2014 12:36:38 PM -RAH
